The Takeover.

In over 14 years of guiding on the Grey Reef section of the North Platte we can honestly count the number of walleye caught in the first 12 years on one hand. Oh, how have times changed. The past 2 years have yielded enough walleye that we have officially lost count. More interestingly, most of these fish have been big brood fish. A couple around 14lbs and a pile in the 6-10lb range. A little fish fact for you, these big females can carry upwards of 600,000 eggs.

How did they get here? Well, to some degree we have always had walleye in the North Platte tailwaters. It's hard to believe we have had this many the whole time and we are just now catching them. High water is the most likely culprit, shooting a walleye slurry as 5-8,000cfs cascaded down the Platte last two summers.

Do I personally think walleye are going to take over the fishery? Not really, it just sounded like an interesting title for an interesting topic. But it will have an impact on the trout to some degree. Walleye are a bad ass predator and in a river system packed with trout it's pretty obvious who's going to be on the walleye menu.

Two Handed Revolution

If your one of those folks who enjoys swinging a fly with a two-hander this might be for you. We all know how hard it is to take two or three months off for steelhead season and sometimes any sort of steelhead/salmon trip can be financially out of the question. So to get your fix start swinging your local trout water! The past few years several of our guides have been getting into the swingin' thing for trout on the North Platte. Both Grey Reef and Miracle Mile are about perfect and there are lots of great rod options that can make it that much more enjoyable. We have been field testing the Scott L2H 1157/4. Let's just say it's a dandy and perfect for the Platte!! It's loaded with an Airflo 360 Skagit Compact line and a 10-ft T-9 sinktip. It's powerful enough to turn over large flies but it's not to big for Wyoming trout on the North Platte!

The Joys of Winter...

The last few weeks have been as spectacular as one could imagine. Ideal winter weather...temperatures above freezing and very little wind. As for the fishing, it's been amazing on Grey Reef, Fremont and Miracle Mile. Here are a few shots from the past week. We hope you enjoy!

Sitting in the Box

Just want to give a quick update of the weather station. We have had it for several weeks. We are also sorry it hasn't been installed yet. We will have to attack the soil with a heavy digging bar and temporarily plant the pole to get things up and running. When it hasn't been nuking wind it has been snowy making digging less than ideal.
You requested the equipment and we will make sure to follow through. I am a weather junkie so I too want to get this up and running.
